Q

Explain the inconsistent triad.

A

The Bible claims that God is:
- omnibenevolent
- omnipotent
- omniscient

It is difficult to accept the nature of God and also explain the existence of evil and suffering in the world.

If God was omnibenevolent, he would want to remove suffering from the world.
If God was omnipotent, he would be able to remove suffering from the world.
If God was omniscient, he would know how to remove suffering from the world.

If God is all three of these characteristics, why hasn’t he removed suffering from the world?

19
Q

Give three ways the Bible shows that Jesus is DIVINE.

A
  • he is omnipotent (Matthew 28:18)
  • he is omniscient?? - predicts his own death and Peter’s denial of him
  • he forgave sins
  • he performed miracles
  • people worshipped and prayed to him
  • he was resurrected from the dead
19
Q

Jesus as DIVINE

A
  • he was born to a human mother (Mary)
  • he had a human body (Luke 24:39)
  • he got tired, thirsty and hungry
  • he showed human emotions (e.g. sorrow)
  • he prayed to God
  • he died
21
Q

Jesus as HUMAN
“Look at my _______ and my ______. ___ is _____! _______ me and _____; a ______ does not have ______ and bones, as you ____ I ____.”

_____ 24:__

A

“Look at my hands and my feet. It is myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
Luke 24:39

22
Q

Give three reasons why the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension are important to Christians.

A
  • resurrection + ascension prove Jesus is divine and the Son of God
  • this means he is worthy of praise + worship, and his teachings have authority
  • resurrection offers hope to Christians - it means that they can be raised too - this is the Christian belief in the afterlife
  • the crucifixion atoned for the sins of humanity - it means that, by believing in and following Jesus, humans can be offered salvation by God
  • crucifixion was a brutal death, and Jesus suffered enormous physical, emotional and spiritual pain because of it - this helps Christians to understand the sacrifice that Jesus made, and the love that he has for the world
23
Q

ASCENSION
“After the Lord Jesus had _____ ____ _____, he was ______ up into ______ and he ____ at the ______ _____ of _____.”

______ 16:19

A

“After the Lord Jesus had spoken with them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.”
Mark 16:19

24
Q

What is salvation?

A

Salvation is being saved from sin and being admitted to heaven, which happens through a Christian’s belief in Jesus.

25
Q

What is atonement?

A

Jesus paid the price for sin when he died on the cross. He took the punishment that humans deserve onto himself. Through this, humans can be reconciled to and forgiven by God - the relationship between God and humanity can be repaired. This is called atonement.

26
Q

What is original sin?

A

Original sin is the idea that human nature is sinful and flawed, so humans act against God. Fundamental Christians believe this was passed down from Adam and Eve when they first disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden.

27

29
Q

Give three ways that atonement and salvation are significant to Christians.

A
  • restore relationship between God and mankind
  • confirm belief in an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God
  • helps them to understand the importance of reconciliation between and forgiveness for other people
  • gives them hope that they can be granted eternal life in God’s presence

A

32
Q

Briefly outline three Christian responses to evil and suffering.

A
  • Book of Psalms: suffering has a purpose and can develop character + understanding
‘Vale of soul-making’ = a theory put forward by philosopher John Hick. It is the idea that evil and suffering have a purpose - make people stronger, help them to appreciate what they have etc
  • Book of Job: Job trusted in God even when he was suffering and didn’t understand why. Christians believe they should do the same, and will be rewarded as Job was if they do
  • God gave people free will, and this explains the presence of moral evil
  • Christians respond to evil and suffering by praying to God, and that God can give people strength to cope
  • Suffering can inspire people to give to charity to try and relieve the suffering of others
33
