What Type of Religion is Christianity
monotheistic
The Old Testament
it is the first part of the bible that describes Jews, their history and the special relationship between them and God. It contains the entire Jewish Tanak, divided into 39 books, the 4 categories are: the Pentateuch, History, Wisdom and Prophets.
The New Testament
contains 27 books, divided into 5 catergories: Gospels, Acts, Pauline Epistles, General Epistles and Revelations.
The Gospels
contain the life and teachings of Jesus
Book of Acts
follows the actions of his disciples following his crucifixion
The Epistles
letters written by early church leaders to communities of worship being established
Pauline Epistles
claim to have St Paul as their author
Revelations
an apocalyptic letter exploring the concept of the end of the world
How Does Matthew Describe the Story of Jesus
connects Jesus’ life to Jewish expectations of the messiah
How Does Mark Describe the Story of Jesus
emphasizes the mystery of Jesus’ identity and the paradox of the suffering of the messiah
How Does Luke Describe the Story of Jesus
highlights the role of the Holy Spirit and the concern for the poor and outcasts
How Does John Describe the Story of Jesus
stresses the eternal pre-existence of Jesus as the word and his intimate relationship with his father
Revelation
there are two types: general and speacil
General Revelation
the way God reveals himself through his creation, every human has an innate appreciation for the wonder of the universe attributed to the revelation of God
Special Revelation
the specific understanding of the Christian God. For Christians God first revealed himself to Jews then ultimately to everyone through incarnate Jesus.
Core Belief in Christianity
they believe in one God and the Holy Trinity consisting of the father, son and Holy Spirit
The Father
refers to God as a creator, omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal being.
The Son
the idea that God became incarnate Jesus
The Holy Spirit
the belief that when Jesus left the Holy Spirit stayed with the people, guiding and inspiring them
Incarnation
when God takes physical form through a person
Resurrection
refers to the resurrection of Jesus 3 days after he died, and it educates adherents that death is not the end but a gateway to eternal life
Salvation
the belief that through the death and resurrection of the incarnate Jesus, all humanity is freed for all time from sin
Sin
failing to live and act in accordance with the will of God and the teachings of Jesus
Atonement
in Christianity it is the idea of the relationship between humans and God being healed through becoming united.
