Q

Why is the last supper important to Christians?

A

The Last Supper is important to Christians because it is the moment when Jesus spells out the meaning of his crucifixion. He is showing Christians that he is to be sacrificed for the benefit of all mankind and for the removal of sins.

Christians remember this event everytime they go to church and a part of the service called the Eucharist.
They eat bread and drink wine to remember what Jesus has done for them.

Q

Why was Jesus killed?

A

Jesus questioned the authorities. This threatened their power so they conspired to have Jesus arrested.

60
Q

Explain the two trials that Jesus went through.

A

The first was under a Jewish leader called Caiaphas (ka-ya-fa) and the second was under a Roman leader called Pontius Pilate.

61
Q

Explain the trial under Caiaphas.

A

The trial under Caiaphas was rigged.

It took place at night and in Caiaphas house. Caiaphas was also the leading prosecutor and the judge!

They accused Jesus and found him guilty of blasphemy. Blasphemy is when you speak badly of God or sacred things. Caiaphas said that Jesus had committed blasphemy because he claimed to be the Messiah and the son of God.

62
Q

How come Jesus had to have a second trial? Why could Caiaphas not have him crucified?

A

Caiaphas didn’t have the power to have Jesus killed because he wasn’t in charge of the area, the Romans were.

63
Q

Explain the trial under Pontius Pilate.

A

Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor in charge of Jerusalem.
When Caiaphas came to him with Jesus, Pilate didn’t see that there was much of a problem.
However, the Jewish people had turned on Jesus and they pressured Pilate into having him crucified. Pilate had Jesus killed as he was worried the Jews would rebel if he didn’t.

64
Q

Describe how Jesus came to be crucified.

A

-because he challenged the religious authorities in Jerusalem.

  • because Caiaphas put pressure on Pontius Pilate to have him executed.
  • so that he could make atonement for the sins of mankind.
  • this was part of his plan for the forgiveness of sins.
65
Q

What is the Annunciation and Incarnation?

A

The Annunciation (to announce something) is the moment where the angel Gabriel comes and speaks to Mary and tells her she is to have a son and call him Jesus. The incarnation of Jesus is the belief in Christianity that God became human in the form of Jesus when Mary gave birth to him.

This is significant because Mary was a virgin, meaning she had never had sex. So, her pregnancy was a miracle. Christians see this as important because it shows that Jesus is born in a way like nobody else, it makes him unique. This acts as evidence for Christians that Jesus is the incarnation of God.

66
Q

Why is the Nativity important to Christians?

A

Christians believe the nativity is important because of the Annunciation and Incarnation.

For example, Jesus was born in a miraculous way as his mother was a virgin.

This means that Jesus was born under circumstances unlike any other human being, so this makes him stand out as being a divine figure. Furthermore, this helps Christians understand that Jesus is to be worshipped because they believe that Jesus is the incarnation of God.

67
Q

Why is Jesus’ birth in a stable an important event for Christians?

A

Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph were travelling to Bethlehem to complete the census (an official survey of a population); therefore, Bethlehem was busy and there was nowhere for them to stay. They had to stay in a stable amongst animals. Jesus was born in these conditions. It was a very dirty place for Jesus to be born and not where many people would expect a God to be born!

This is significant because it shows that Jesus is here to help those at the bottom of society. Jesus was born into poor, humble circumstances and throughout his life he spends time with those on the outskirts of society. This helps Christians understand that they should have respect for the poor in society as Jesus was born into poor conditions himself.

68
Q

Describe Jesus’ actions as part of his ministry.

A

Jesus didn’t just teach people, he also did things. He got involved in situations which he thought were unfair and challenged them.

Christians see Jesus as the perfect example of a human being and should therefore follow in his footsteps and try to live as he lived.

69
Q

Describe Jesus’ miracles as part of his ministry.

A

Jesus performs lots of miracles in the Gospels. He turns water into wine, feeds 5000 people with five loaves and two fish, raises people from the dead, calms a storm, heals people, walks on water and the list goes on!

Some believe Jesus actually performed these miracles, but some Christians believe they are metaphors. This means that the stories of miracles are used to make a point about who Jesus is.

70
Q

What happened at Jesus’ arrest in the garden of Gethsemane?

A

Jesus is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane by Caiaphas’ men led by Judas. Judas identifies Jesus with a kiss, and he is arrested.

Simon tries to defend Jesus and cuts off the ear of one of Caiaphas’ men. Jesus stops this and says to Simon ‘He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword’.

71
Q

What happened when Jesus was on the cross?

A

When Jesus is nailed to the cross different things are said according to different Gospels.

In some Gospels Jesus cries out ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’

He says about those crucifying him: ‘Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Jesus is also crucified next to two criminals. The one on his left mocks Jesus and the one on his right asks Jesus to ‘remember him when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus replies ’I tell you today, you will sit with me in paradise.’

72
Q

Describe St Augustine’s idea of original sin.

A

Saint Augustine came up with the idea of Original Sin because he needed to answer the question of why bad things happen in the world. He was around when Rome was beginning to fall and therefore he lived through a long period of violence and suffering.

Augustine looked to the Bible to find an answer and in particular looked to the story of Adam and Eve at the beginning of the Bible.

When God creates the world he says that it is ‘good’ and He lives in a close relationship with human beings. He gives Adam and Eve one rule to follow which is, not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

A serpent appears in the story and tempts Eve to eat from the tree by lying to her. The serpent says; “’You will not certainly die,’ the serpent said to the woman. ‘For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”

Eve ate the fruit and gave some to Adam. Once they did this they immediately felt ashamed. God found out what they had done and banished them from the Garden of Eden and made them suffer.

Augustine said that this was the first sin ever committed. He argues that because of Adam and Eve sin is now a part of human nature, it is something that everyone has the desire to do. We have inherited sin, according to Augustine and it is something we are all born with.

Catholics baptise their baby in order to cleanse them of the Original Sin they are born with.

By being becoming a Christian, they believe that their sins are taken away through their belief in Jesus.

79
Q

What is the Nicene Creed?

A

Church leaders gathered and created the Nicene Creed at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD

The council was called by the Emperor Constantine. This was a very important meeting because those who attended decided on the divine nature of Jesus and his relationship to God the Father.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

These concepts are very important in the accepted understanding of the
Trinity.

80
Q

What does the Nicene Creed show?

A

There is one God who exists in three persons.

God the Father is the creator of all things. Jesus, as God the Son, suffered and died as a fully human being to save other humans from sin.

Jesus rose from the dead and is seated in Heaven as the Son of God.
God the Holy Spirit gives life to all things.

The Holy Spirit inspires people and shows them the will of God.

81
Q

What was the Council of Nicaea?

A

The Council of Nicaea was a meeting that happened in 325 AD. It was called by the Roman Emperor Constantine I.

During the council, bishops from various Christian communities gathered to discuss and establish key doctrinal principles. One of the primary outcomes was the formulation of the Nicene Creed, which affirmed the divinity of Jesus Christ and rejected the Arian belief that Jesus was a created being.

82
Q

What are the Beatitudes?

A

he Beatitudes are a set of blessings outlined by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.

They are a series of statements beginning with “Blessed are…” which describe the characteristics and attitudes that are considered blessed or favored by God. Each Beatitude is followed by a promise of blessing or reward.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
