What is worship?
Offering to God the praise that he is due. This may be done in public or in private worship.
What is liturgical worship?
Worship that follows a set pattern or format.
What is non-liturgical worship?
Worship where there is no set structure or may be spontaneous (unplanned).
What is charismatic worship?
Worship in Pentecostal churches where it is felt that worship should be led by the Holy Spirit.
What is informal worship?
Worship which is more relaxed/informal. For example, people wear informal rather than smart dress or if worship is held at home.
What is communal worship?
Worship done as a group, usually in a church or as a group at home.
What is private worship?
Any worship done individually, including worship done outside of church or a private moment during a church service.
What is adoration in prayer?
Prayer that praises God and tells him how great he is.
What is confession in prayer?
Prayer when Christians admit their sins and say sorry.
What is thanksgiving in prayer?
Prayer that involves thanking God for all that he does and gives.
What is supplication in prayer?
Prayer that is asking for God’s help.
What is extempore prayer?
Unplanned/spontaneous prayer.
What is set prayer?
Pre-planned prayer.
What is an arrow prayer?
Short and direct prayer sent straight to God.
What is the Lord’s Prayer?
The prayer taught to the disciples by Jesus; also known as the ‘Our Father’.
What is a sacrament?
A sacrament is an outward sign of an inward grace, something people can experience with their senses but with a deeper reality that cannot be experienced through the senses.
What is Baptism?
A ceremony to introduce someone to the Christian faith and remove sin.
What is infant baptism?
Performed on a baby, where the parents and godparents promise to bring the child up in the Christian faith.
What is believers baptism?
This is done when a person is old enough to decide for themselves if they want to become a Christian, involving full immersion under the water.
What is Holy Communion?
Also known as Mass or The Eucharist, it involves sharing bread and wine to remember Jesus’s death and resurrection.
What is transubstantiation?
During the Mass, Roman Catholics believe that the bread and the wine become the actual body and blood of Christ.
What is memorialism?
Protestant Christians see Holy Communion as a symbol of Jesus’s body and blood.
What is a pilgrimage?
A journey made for religious reasons, alone or with other Christians, to a sacred place.
What is Lourdes?
A place of pilgrimage in France, where the water is believed to heal people.
What is Iona?
A place of pilgrimage on an island off the coast of Scotland, where many Christians visit for peace and to feel the presence of God.
What are festivals in Christianity?
For Christians, this is a time of celebration to mark the key events in Jesus’s life.
