Christian Moral Principles + Action Flashcards
Bible - cmp
some christians the bible is seen as revealing God’s will directly so it is the only source of authority
Evangelicals give the Bible authority as the inspired word of God which is supported by scripture
Benefits of direct word
Bible becomes an infallible source of information
The Bile has no errors or mistakes
Criticisms of direct word
The biggest issues with this approach are the clear conflicts in the Bible.
There are lots of passages of rule in Leviticus that Christians don’t follow
The Churches and the Bible
Scripture is recognised as the canon of texts was determined by the Church
The Catholic concept of ‘the sacred tradition’ is seen as being equal to scripture
The Church as equal authority as the Bible
Protestants and the Bible
The church is a living expression of the gospel.
They reject the idea that the Bible is the sole source of moral inspiration.
Anglicans and the Bible
Bible comes first
Tradition is not separate from scripture but is started by it and interprets it
Reason - cmp
Needed to make sense of experiences
Enlightenment teaches that reason is objective and neutral
Reason produces different interpretations of the Bible and so different moral decisions
Bonhoeffer
The cost if discipleship is sacrifice and suffering
Christian calling was not about faith not a rational account of theology but obedience
You shouldn’t have reward without effort, struggle or a price
