Christian Liberals - Origins Of Life Flashcards
1
Q
Christian Liberals - KU
A
- Liberal Christians will interpret Genesis 2 in a more symbolic or metaphorical way
- They believe that Genesis 2 tells them that God was responsible for creating life, but most believe Genesis 2 isn’t conclusive regarding ‘how’ God did it
- This allows many Liberal Christians to accept the theory of evolution alongside scripture
- There are different ways that Liberal Christians will approach the theory
- Many “Old Earth Creationists’ believe that God created life and He also guides the process of evolution as it develops

Q
Christian Liberals - Analysis
A
- Arguably this shows that Liberal Christians interpret Genesis 2 as a rough guide on creation.
- This means they do think God was partly responsible for creating the universe but they don’t exactly know how, some suggest he guides the process of evolution
- They accept the scripture alongside science

Q
Christian Liberals - quote
A
‘Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals’ Genesis 2
- This quote implies to a Liberal Christians that God created animals over a span of many years and the evolved alongside his creation
4
Q
Christian Liberals - Strength
A
- Liberal Christian’s can accept the story of Genesis 2 but, as they understand it symbolically, there is no room to understand their faith alongside modern science
- Evolutionary theory is not inconsistent with a liberal understanding of Genesis 2. Evolution could be a process that God used to understand life
5
Q
Christian Liberals - weakness
A
- For some Christians a liberal approach is straying too far from the original text of the Bible. It is trying to combine religion and science, two different types of reasoning and this is not only inconsistent but dilutes faith
- Many question why an al-knowing and all-loving God would use a process such as evolution to create and develop life on Earth because many of the mutations in DNA are actually harmful and cause pain and suffering
- Darwin’s understanding that evolution was a process of natural selection and not artificial selection meant that the process could develop by itself. The process does not require any divine intervention from a creator to work

Q
Christian Liberals - Evaluation
A
- I agree with Liberal Christian interpretation on the Origins of life to an extent as liberal Christian’s Cana crept the story from Genesis 2 but as they also understand it symbolically their is room for their faith alongside science
- I disagree with Liberal Christian interpretation on the Origins of life to an extent as a liberal approach can be straying too far from the original text in the Bible and trying to combine religion and science is very difficult and has inconsistency’s and therefore can dilute their faith
