Christian Divine Command Theory Flashcards
general views of Christian Divine command theory
-God origin and regulator of morality
-gods act of commanding something good or bad makes it good or bad
-e.g 10 commandments, divine law
example of christian DCT
Abraham and Isaac.
DCT and objective
-Gods command makes something right or wrong in an objective sense
-objective means mind independent
-if something is objectively true then its a matter if fact not of opinion .
achieving good
-simply a matter of following gods command
-christians believe that god exist s and therefore the fundamental nature of reality includes divinity.
-since morality is what God commands, morality therefore has a meta physical foundation in reality.
superior to God?
if there were a command superior to Gods command then god would be inferior to that thing.
-god is all powerful and cant be inferior.
-if goodness was not a matter of gods command then god would be unable to change what is good/bad or to make something good/ bad.
-in that case there would be something God lacks the power to do. which would make him not omnipotent. omnipotent power must include power over morality.
