Q

What are different Christian beliefs about creation?

A
  • Fundamental Christians believe the creation stories to be completely true
  • For others the story is more symbolic
  • There are different attitudes to how the word ‘day’ in Genesis should be understood, as some see as ‘day’ to mean a long period of time
  • Some may see ‘day’ literally, as 24 hours, so would reject any theory that says the Earth has developed over millions of years
  • However, a non-literal interpretation could believe in both the creation story and the Big Bang theory if they believe seven ‘days’ could actually be millions of years

Q

Before Jesus, how did people atone, and what did Jesus atoning change?

A
  • Before Jesus, Jews atoned through animal sacrifices
‘The goat shall bear all their iniquities’
  • By dying on the cross, Jesus became a sacrificial ‘lamb’ to take upon himself the sins of the world
  • His sacrifice meant there was no need to sacrifice animals anymore
20

A
  • A meal Jesus shared with his disciples before death
  • Jesus is celebrating the Jewish festival of Passover with his disciples, but gives it new meaning by telling them the bread they are eating represents his body and the wine his blood

21
Q

What is a quote that shows the significance of the Last Supper?

A

‘This is my blood.. which is poured out for the forgiveness of sins’

22
Q

Why is the resurrection important to Christians?

A
  • Fundamental to Christian faith

23

  • After a period of time, he ascended

  • Others think the description of him physically rising up is symbolic, showing that Jesus’ time on earth in human form were over
26
Q

Why is the ascension significant?

A
  • It marks the end of Jesus’ time on earth in a physical way
  • Jesus blessed his followers before ascending to heaven
  • Jesus’ spirit could now be at work in the world
27
Q

What do Christians believe about the Bible?

A
  • It is made up of 66 ‘books’ and was written by a number of authors
  • The authors were all inspired by their experience of God
  • The Bible is a book of revelation- this is because they believe that through the Bible, God is revealed and they can know more about him
  • They believe the Bible is a record of divine law, so they can turn to it for advice in their lives
  • The Bible’s teachings can encourage Christians to live a good life
28
Q

What are different views on how Biblical writing should be interpreted?

A
  • Some believe the Bible is the directly inspired ‘Word of God’ and they should take all the Bible’s content as literally true. If science contradicts a Bible teaching, they will believe the Bible over the science, and it is the most important source of authority.
  • Some see it as a book which requires interpretation . It was written in a specific time and culture, and some teachings may need to be adapted to suit modern society
  • Some Christians take a more liberal view of the Bible, and they don’t believe all the events in it actually happened, but they are symbolic stories that show us how God wants us to live
29
Q

Apart from the Bible, where else will Christians go for life advice?

A
  • Seek advice from a Minister of Religion or other Christians
  • Praying and asking for guidance
  • Following their conscience
30
Q

What is a sin?

A

An immoral act that goes against God’s law

31
Q

What is the idea of original sin?

A
  • That Christians are born with original sin- the desire to disobey God
  • Original Sin came into the world because of the Fall, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God
  • It is this sin that separates humans from God
32
Q

What are some problems caused by original sin?

A
  • Many modern Christians see it as unfair for God to punish all of humanity for an act committed by one man
  • Many Christians take a non-literal interpretation of the Bible, so don’t believe the Fall actually happened
  • Even if the bible is taken literally, it’s hard to explain biologically how original sin could be passed between generations
33
Q

How do many modern Christians understand original sin?

A
  • A useful way of understanding that humans are prone to doing bad things and acting in a way that is against God’s law
34
Q

How do Christians achieve salvation?

A
  • Catholics believe that by taking part in sacraments they will be able to achieve salvation and go to heaven
  • Catholics belive baptism washes them clean of sin and that by confessing the sins they commit in their life they are freed from them
  • Many Protestants believe they must have faith in Jesus and repent their sins to achieve salvation
35
Q

What are Christian beliefs about Grace and the Holy Spirit?

A
  • In order to help them live a good life, Christians believe God sends the holy spirit to bring grace
  • The supernatural gift of grace means that Christians are able to pray for help from God, to turn away from sin and live good lives
  • Many Christians believe that in special rites (sacraments) such as baptisms and the Eucharist, the Holy Spirit comes down upon them as the Sacraments are performed
36
Q

Why is the role of the Holy Spirit especially important in Evangelical worship?

A
  • Evangelical Christians use a form of worship where they are encouraged to be moved by the spirit
  • They believe the Holy Spirit is present and influences them in their prayers
  • Some Christians feel they are moved to speak in tongues, which they consider a gift from the Holy Spirit
  • Some believe acts of ‘faith healing’ may take place within religious services, where the Holy Spirit works in miraculous ways to heal people
37
Q

What is the general Christian eschatological belief?

A
  • There is life after death
  • Christians believe this life is preparation for an afterlife to be with God in heaven
  • This is why the story of Jesus’ resurrection and crucifixion are so important because it provides them with evidence that death is not the end and our immortal souls will live on
38
Q

What is a quote about the afterlife?

A

‘I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come’
- Nicene Creed

39
Q

What does Jesus say and do about the afterlife?

A
  • Anyone who believes in him will never die
  • He is recorded to have raised a man, Lazarus, from the dead

‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’

40
Q

What do Christians believe about Judgement?

A
  • They believe there will be a Judgement Day when people will be judged by God for the quality of their lives
  • They believe on this day, Jesus will return to Earth in a ‘second coming’, which will mark the end of human existence on earth
  • This belief is known as the Parousia
  • People will be bodily resurrected on this day, but they will be transformed into some glorified state. Illness, pain and death will no longer exist, and the world will be purified of sin
41
Q

What do Christians believe about resurrection?

A
  • They believe that the spiritual part of a person, their soul, is able to join God in heaven when they die
  • However, at the end of time, there will also be a physical resurrection
42
Q

What are general Christian beliefs on heaven?

A
  • Most Christians believe heaven is where people go in the afterlife if they have the right, and it is where God and angels are.
  • Some believe heaven is an actual, physical place, whereas others believe it exists more in a spiritual dimension
43
Q

What are general Christian beliefs on hell?

A
  • Hell is a place of suffering
  • Some Christians believe hell is a physical place where people burn eternally
  • Most Christians believe the real torment of hell resides in absolute separation from God
44
Q

What are traditional beliefs on heaven and hell?

A
  • Thought of as real places
  • Believed that hell was underground and heaven was in the sky
45
Q

What are contemporary beliefs on heaven and hell?

A
  • If God is a God of forgiveness and compassion, then would he not ultimately forgive everyone, which means nobody goes to hell forever?
46
Q

What is purgatory and who believes in it?

A
  • Catholic Christians believe in purgatory
  • They believe that many people who die can’t gain immediate access to heaven because they are tainted by their sins
  • These people go to purgatory, which is like a waiting room for heaven, where they undergo a process of purification and cleansing before securing entry into heaven
  • On Judgement day, all those in purgatory will be sent to heaven
