Literalist views on genesis creation story
The points of the story actually happened the way they we described, literally:
- god’s spirit moved across waters
- there were 6 days of 24 hours in which god created the world
- Adam was formed out of the dust from the earth
- eve was formed out of Adams rib
Non literalist views on the genesis creation story
The main point of the story is not to detail how god created the world but to state that he did:
- god did the create the world
- he used the natural processes he created
- there were clear periods of creation, though not 24 hours as such
The incarnation of Jesus
The death of Jesus was part of a divine plan to bring about salvation
It was also the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies
Jesus himself referred to his crucifixion as a fulfilment of the prophecies. The crucifixion was necessary to allow the resurrection to take place
Why is the crucifixion of Jesus important to Christians?
The death of Jesus was an act of atonement for the sins of the people in the world
The death of Jesus is therefore part of the process for the redemption/salvation of humanity
The death of Jesus was also necessary to allow the resurrection to take place
Salvation from the resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus from the dead shoes that death is not the end, but that through faith in the suffering and death of Jesus, people can be restored to a relationship with god- their sins and their punishment are dealt with
In addition, there is no longer a need to fear death, as believers in Christ and his sacrifice will be resurrected to live eternally with god and Christ in heaven
Atonement from the resurrection
The story of the fall, where Adam and Eve went against God’s instructions, led to a breakdown in the relationships between humans and god
Christians believe that every person has the inclination to sin, or do wrong
The penalty for this is death and separation from god
However, the suffering and death of Jesus, on behalf of all people, means the relationship with god is restored
