Chpt 8 respiration Flashcards
what is respiration
a chemical reaction which occurs in the mitochondria of your cells. it releases energy stored in glucose
what is aerobic respiration
respiration in the presence of oxygen
aerobic respiration word equation
glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water
aerobic respiration symbol equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ——> 6CO2 + 6H2O
what type of reaction is respiration
an exothermic reaction cause it releases energy
Anaerobic respiration
respiration in the absence of oxygen
anaerobic respiration equation humans
glucose —-> lactic acid
oxygen debt
when you owe oxygen to your body after exercise
how is lactic acid removed
lactic acid diffuses into your blood (from high conc to low conc) which then carries the lactic acid to the liver where it diffuses from the blood to the liver (high conc to low conc). The lactic acid is then converted back to glucose using an oxidation reaction then it diffuses back into the blood
what happens when we exercise
-we use up energy more quickly
- we respire more quickly (use up oxygen and glucose faster)
- our hearts beat faster to pump oxygenated blood around the body
equation for anaerobic respiration in plants + microorganisms
glucose ——> ethanol + carbon dioxide
fermentation
anaerobic respiration in yeast cells is called fermentation
metabolism
the sum of all the chemical reactions that happen in an organism
breakdown reactions
make more, smaller and less complicated molecules
synthesis reactions
make larger, more complex molecules this reaction requires energy from respiration
