Chpt. 5 Biofeedback Flashcards
What is EMG?
electromyogram; measures muscle activity
-Two electrodes (or sensors) are placed on the skin over the muscle to be monitored.
What are two main ways EMG is used ?
up-training (increase muscle activity)
down-training (decrease muscle activity)
What are the most common muscles to down-train?
frontalis
masseter
trapezius
The EMG machine signals with either sound or coloured light which allows to do what for patient?
to focus on muscle activity, and either relax or contract muscle
What is a muscle commonly used to “re-train” how to contract a muscle?
Vastus Medialis Obliqus; (patellofemoral pain syndrome)
When electrodes from EMG is placed on specific muscle (eg. VMO) what is given to patient for maximal stimulation of muscle?
CKC exercises
What are the most common muscles to up-train? (particularly for patients who had strokes) (7)
- VMO
- Infraspinatus/Supraspinatus
- Teres minor
- Erector spinae
- Transverse abdominis
- Pelvic floor
What is temperature biofeedback?
measuring skin temperature is a useful tool in learning how to manage stress;
*because your temp. decreases because blood is redirected to muscles/organs
What is Galvanic skin response (GSR) ?
or Electrodermal Response (EDR)
measures electrical conductance in the skin, which is associated with the activity of the sweat glands
- salt and water is measured in sweat gland ducts
What is GSR effective in treating? (2)
-phobias
-anxiety
etc.
What are other methods of Biofeedback? (3)
- EEG (beta, alpha, theta, delta- slow waves)
* just calculates the waves - Heart rate monitor
- Blood pressure cuff
- Chest expansion measurement (for respiratory activity)
What does Biofeedback do?
Decreases tension but not Pain
