chpt 5 Flashcards
what is tissue
a group of similar cells and cell products working together
what are the 4 types of tissue
epithelial, nervous and muscular
what is the matrix composed of?
fibroud tissue and a clear gel substance
types of embryonic tissue
ectoderm
endoderm
mesoderm
what is the ectoderm layer
the outer layer
gives rise to epidermis and nervous system
what is the endoderm layer
the inner layer
gives rise to mucous membrane lining degestive and respiratpry tracts
what is the mesoderm layer
the middle layer
gives rise to cartilage, bone and blood
what is epithelial tissue
- Epithelia are sheets of closely adhering cells, one or more cells thick
- Covers body surfaces and lines body cavities
- Upper surface usually exposed to the environment or an internal space in the body
- Constitutes most glands
Avascular (does not have blood vessels) - Usually nourished by underlying connective tissue
simple epithelia vs stratified epithelia
Simple epithelia
Contain one layer of cells
Named by shape of cells
All cells touch basement membrane
Stratified epithelia
Contain more than one layer
Named by shape of apical cells
Some cells rest on top of others and do not touch basement membrane
