Splenectomy: Effects of (3)

A
  1. Blood changes
    (increase in number of platelets and abnormal RBCs)
  2. Infection
    Increased risk of bacterial septicemia
    Especially in children with strep pneumo
  3. Liver (some in bone marrow too) takes of blood filtration
    Starts in ~2 hrs and fully functioning in ~24 hrs
    Macrophage numbers increase greatly

  2. Can spread to salivary glands, lymph nodes and oropharyngeal lymphoid tissues
