Constitution
This convention cleared that the National Government had to be strengthened. Also, showed that there were serious problems with the Articles of Confederation.
Constitutional Convention of 1787
How many people were present at the Constitutional Convention of 1787?
55 representatives including Lawyers, merchants, college presidents, doctors, governors, planters, and more.
Designed by William Patterson. Also called for the 3 same branches but Legislature would be unicameral and each state would get 1 vote.
New Jersey Plan
- Meetings could not be held unless delegates from at least 7 states. 2. Decisions were to be made by majority votes of states. 3. Each state had One vote. 4. delegates from each state would also decide by majority vote. 5. All discussions were to be kept secret.
- Discard Articles instead of Revise Articles.
Operating Procedure
This plan was designed by James Madison. Called for a Government with Three Branches: 1. Legislative 2. Executive 3. Judicial
Virginia Plan
A form of government in which power is divided between the federal, or national government and the states.
Federalism
Where the New Jersey Plan and Virginia Plan were debated for a whole 6 weeks and some delegates threatened to leave.
Constitutional Compromise
Led by Alexander Hamilton: wanted a strong executive branch, for the federal government to have the power to tax, build an army and navy.
Federalists
Stated that the congress shall be bicameral: Senate - Each state will have equal representation. House of Representatives - Representations based on population.
The Great Compromise.
Led by Thomas Jefferson: wanted a weak executive branch, for the states to have more power than the Federal Government.
Anti-Federalists

Three parts of the Constitution.
All tax laws must originate in the House of Representatives and A bill may become law only after passing both houses of Congress and being signed by the President. President may veto laws.

Creates the Congress and Gives it Legislative powers
