Chpt 21- Bite Wing Techniques Flashcards
What does a bit wing image include?
the crowns of the maxillary and mandibular teeth, inter proximal areas and areas of the crestal bone
what are bing wing images used to detect?
interproximal caries and crestal bone levels
define interproximal
between two adjacent surfaces
define interproximal examination
intra oral examination used to inspect the crowns of both maxillary and mandibular teeth on a single image
define bite wing receptor
type of receptor used in interproximal examination the wing wing receptor has a wing or tab that the patient bites on to stabilize the receptor
define alveolar bone
bone that supports and encases the roots of teeth
define crestal bone
coronal portion of alveolar bone found between teeth
define contact areas
the area of a tooth that touches an adjacent the area where adjacent tooth surfaces touch eachother
define horizontal bite wing
the bite wing receptor is places in the mouth with the long portion of the receptor in a horizontal direction
define opened contact
on a dental image opened contact appear as thin radiolucent lines between adjacent tooth surfaces
define overlapped contacts
on a dental image the area where the contact area of one tooth is superimposed over the contact area of an adjacent tooth
define vertical bite wing
the bite wing recpetor is places in the mouth with the long portion of the receptor in a vertical direction
Fill in the blank:
The receptor is placed in the mouth ______ to the crowns of both maxillary and mandibular teeth
parallel
what vertical angulation should be used when taking a bite wing image
+ 10 deg
what is used to stabilize the receptor?
a beam alignment device or bite wing tab
how is a beam alignment device used?
to position an intra oral receptor in the mouth and maintain the receptor in position during the imaging procedure
what is an example of a beam alignment device?
Rinn xcp extension cone paralleling system
what is recommended for bite wing projections
Rinn XCP system
what is used to limit amount of raditation exposure
collimator
What are 3 sizes of receptors
0,2,3
what is size 0 used for?
posterior teeth of children with primary dentition Always placed in horizontal postion
what is a size 2 receptor used for and what position
posterior teeeth in older children and adults, can be placed vertically and horizontal
what is a size 3 receptor used for? and what position
longer and narrower only used for bite wing exposures in horizontal position
which receptor is least recommended
size 3
how can angulation be utilized
by moving the pid in both vertical or horizontal planes
what is horizontal angulation
positioning of the central ray in a horizontal or side to side plane
what does correct horizontal angulation look like
the dental ray is directed perpendicular to the curvature of the arch and through the contact areas of the teeth
contact areas are opened and examinations for caries can be completed
what does incorrect horizontal angulation look like
results in overlapped contact areas and cannot be used in examination may require a retake
what is vertical angulation
positioning the pid in a vertical or up and down plane, may be positive or negative
what does it mean to have a positive angulation
if the PID is positioned above the occlusal plane and the central ray is directed down
what does a negative angulation mean
if the PID is positioned below the occlusal plane and the central ray is directed upward
Rules for Bite Wing Techniques
how must the receptor be placed?
to cover the prescribed area of teeth
Rules for Bite Wing Techniques
How must the bite wing receptor be positioned in order to cover the crowns of both the maxillary and mandibular teeth?
parallel
Rules for Bite Wing Techniques
The receptor must be ______ when the patient bites on the bite wing tab or the bite block of the beam alignment device
stabalized
Rules for Bite Wing Techniques
What type of angulation is it when a bite wing tab is used with film or PSP sensors having the central ray of the x ray beam directed at +10 deg.
vertical angulation
Rules for Bite Wing Techniques
what must the x ray beam be directed through in horizontal angulation
contact areas between teeth
Rules for Bite Wing Techniques
Why must the x ray beam be centered on the receptor in bite wing images
to ensure all areas of the receptor is are exposed
what happens if the x ray beam is not centered on the receptor
only a partial image could be produced
When taking bite wing images you should position the patient head so that the maxillary arch is ______ to the floor and the midsagital (midline) is _________ to the floor
- parallel
- perpendicular
what protective equipment should go on the patient before taking x rays
led apron with a thyroid collar
what should the patient remove before having x ray images taken
eyeglasses and all objects from the mouth (dentures, retainers and gum etc)
what is the exposure sequence for receptor placements
- expose the premolar bite wing receptor first
- expose the molar bite wing receptor next
3, repeat on opposite sides
What must the premolar bite wing always include
the distal of the canine (cuspid)
what must a molar bite wing always include
the distal of the second pre molar ( bicuspid)
What are vertical bite wings used for
to examine the level of alveolar bone
What is edentulous spaces
no teeth
what may be to be done to support edentulous spaces during x rays
placing a cotton roll in the area of the missing tooth to support the bite wing tab or beam alignment device
what may you need to do if the paitent has tori
place the receptor between the tori and the tongue
