Chpt 2: Nervous System Functioning Flashcards
What is the Central NS and what does it do?
A division of the nervous system that involves the brain and spinal cord, which receives and transmits neural messages to and from the brain and the peripheral NS.
What is the brain?
An organ that coordinates mental processes and behaviour and regulates bodily activity.
What is the spinal cord?
A cable of nerve tissue that connects the brain to the peripheral nervous system.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Every neuron in the body outside of the brain and spinal cord.
What is the somatic nervous system
a division of the Peripheral NS that transmits neural messages related to volantary motor movements.
What is Neuron
a nerve cell that recieves and transmits neural information
What is a interneuron
neurons that transfer neural messages between sensory and motor neurons.
What is a consious response?
a voluntary action that is initiated by the brain and performed by the body intentionally.
What is a sensory receptor
a nerve ending that detects internal and external sensations
What is an Unconscious response?
