Chpt 1: Key Science Skills Flashcards
What is the aim?
The purpose of the study (what you are intending to study)
What is the independent variable?
What is manipulated by the experimenter.
What is the dependant variable?
The variable that is measured to test the effect of the independent variable.
What is a hypothesis?
A testable prediction that identifies the population, and the strength and direction, of a relationship between two variables.
What is the steps to designing a experiement?
- Write a research question
- Identify the aim
- Formulate a hypothesis
4.Design a method - Collect and analyse the data
- Report the findings
What is a between-subject design?
An experimental design in which individuals are divided into different groups and complete only one experimental condition.
What is a within-subjects design?
An experimental design in which participants complete every experimental condition.
What is a mixed method design?
A procedure for collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative research in a single study.
What is a case study?
An in-depth study on a activity, behaviour, event or problem
What is an observational study?
Also called fieldwork, involves investigation through observing and interacting with an enviroment.
What is a correlation study?
Investigates the link between two variables.
What is a sample?
A part of the population of the study
What does generalisable mean?
The ability for a sample’s results to be used to make conclusions about the wider research population.
What is stratified sampling?
Any sampling technique that involves selecting people from the population in a way that ensures that it’s strata are proportionately represented in the sample.
What is the “strata”?
Another name for a subset.
