chpt 1 experimental design Flashcards
1
Q
What are the methods of gas collection ?
A
- downward delivery
- upwards delivery
- gas syringe
- water displacement
2
Q
How does downwards delivery work ?
A
- for gases denser than air and soluble in water
eg cl, h+
3
Q
How does upwards delivery work ?
A
- from gases denser than air and soluble in water
eg ammonia, hydrogen and helium
4
Q
How does water displacement work ?
A
- from gases insoluble / slightly soluble in water
eg hydrogen and O2
5
Q
How does gas syringe work ?
A
- collects most gases and measures their volume
6
Q
What are the methods to dry gases ?
A
- conc sulfuric acid
- quicklime (calcium oxide)
- fused calcium chloride
7
Q
How does conc sulfuric acid work ?
A
- dry gases except for alkali ones
- if dries alkali, neutralisation rxn will occur
8
Q
How does quicklime (calcium oxide) work ?
A
- used mainly to dry ammonia gas
- do not use to dry acidic gases bc neutralisation rxn will occur
9
Q
How does fused calcium chloride work ?
A
- used mainly to dry most gases except for ammonia
- calcium chloride reacts with ammonia so drying does not take place
