chpt 21 polymers Flashcards
1
Q
What is addition polymerisation ?
A
- addition polymerisation occurs when unsaturated monomers join together without loss of molecule or atom
- polymer formed is an addition polymer
2
Q
What is condensation polymerisation ?
A
- condensation polymer is formed when monomers combine to form a polymer, with the removal of a small molecule such as water or hydrogen chloride
- polymers made by reacting two monomers of diff functional group
- condensation polymerisation also forms small molecules eg water
3
Q
What type of polymer is polyester and what is it joined by ?e
A
- condensation polymer
- linked by ester linkages to join the repeat units togetther
COO links - OH is removed from caboxylic acid on both ends
- H is removed from other monomer eg diol of alcohol
4
Q
What type of polymer is a polyamide ?
A
- condensation polymer
2.linked by amide linkages that joins repeat units together - OH lost by carboxylic acid on both ends
- H lost by amide
Forms CON link
5
Q
What are the differences btwn condensation and addition polymers ?
A
- addn polymers only contain unsaturated monomers. condensation polymers require functional groups on both ends of monomer
- only polymer is formed for addn polymer. cdn polymerisation also forms small molecules eg water
- addn polymer and monomers have same empirical formula and composition of mass. cdn polymer does not have same empirical formula as monomers as they cut off small molecules.
- mass of monomers = mass of addn polymer. mass of monomer NOT = masof cdn polymer bs of OH and H released
6
Q
What is depolymerisation ?
A
- polymers undergo depolymerisation through acid hydrolysis
- polymers break down in water with the presence of a acid catalyst to form the monomers
