CHP.7 - MALFUNCTIONING BRAINS; THE IMPACT OF INJURY & UNDERSTANDING NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS THROUGH ANIMAL STUDIES Flashcards
what is aphasia?
is the impairment of language caused by damage to the brain
what are the two most common types of aphasia?
Wernicke’s and Broca’s
what is Broca’s area?
located in the frontal lobe, Broca’s area is responsible for speech production
what are characteristics of Broca’s aphasia?
non-fluent speech, lack of grammer, difficulty writing, difficulty translating information to speech
what is Wernicke’s area?
located in the temporal lobe, Wernicke’s area is responsible for understanding and producing language
what are characteristics of Wernicke’s aphasia?
difficulty understanding written and spoken language, difficulty producing written and spoken language that makes sense, fluent but nonsense speech
what are differences in comprehension between Wernicke’s and Broca;s aphasia?
Wernicke’s aphasia sufferers are blissfully unaware what they say and hear doesn’t make sense, while Broca’s aphasia sufferers know and understand, they just cant express themselves
what is spatial neglect?
a disorder where the person affected systematically ignores all stimuli on one side of the body
what is a commisurotomy?
an operation severing the corpus callosum
when is a commisurotomy performed, and what is the outcome?
it is often a last resort for severe epilepsy sufferers, and it causes split-brain, although there are often not major side-effects
what is an affect of split-brain?
the hemispheres can no longer communicate
what is animal modelling?
a study using animals to conduct research
