Chp 2 - Positivist Theories Flashcards

1
Q

Importance and Use of a theory?

A

○ Abstract ideas you have to connect to the world
○ Necessary because facts never interpret themselves
○ However, theory without a concept to apply it to is just a bunch of abstract ideas – therefore theory and practice have to be integrated
○ It is through theory that we come to understand the world
○ Theory provides us with the means of explaining and understanding deviance
Areas of focus within sociological theories may be easily explainable, but areas outside the focal range are often explained to a lesser extent if at all

Actual Observation

19
Q

Positivist/Objectivist Theories ask questions like

A

WHY do people become deviant? WHAT can we do about it?

20
Q

What do Positivist/Objectivist Theories suggest about traits

A

21
Q

Understanding is grounded in

observation

22
Q

Objectivist theories are used to explain the… of deviance

Q

Objectivist Theories attempt to establish…

Q

Include 3 types of theories:

Functionalist, Learning and Social Control Theories

25
Q

Objective Theories are modelled after…

approaches to theorizing in the natural sciences which “seek generalizable, universally applicable laws” – in this case rules that govern the social environment (pursuit of planning for a better society)

26
Q

Positivist Sociologists seek … relationships

A

Cause and effect relationships in the form of statistical relationships

27
Q

Functionalist Theories focus on

A

The role that structure of society plays in deviance
