Chp. 2 - Fold Mountains Flashcards
What is the name of the downfalls?
Synclines
What is the name of the upfolds?
Anticlines
What happens when two plates collide?
The pressure from the earths plate slowly folds the earths crust into fold mountains
How are fold mountains formed ?
Fold mountains are formed when the crust is compressed and is buckled up to form them, similar to the way a sheet of paper fold when it is pushed by two sides
Name three fold mountains where they are and what plates that collided to from them?
1) The Alps in Europe were caused when the African plate collided with the Eurasian plate .
2) The Himalayas in Asia were caused when the Indian plate collided with the Eurasian plate.
3) The Andes in South America were caused when the Nazca plate collided with the South American plate.
The collision of what types of two plates cause earthquakes ?
Oceanic crust colliding with a continental crust.
Draw a labelled diagram of the layers of the rock
Draw a labelled diagram of the formation of the Andes mountains
Now explain the formation of the Andes mountains?
The Nazca plate is moving towards the South American plate. Where they meet or collide, the Nazca plate sinks under the South American plate. The crust is folded to form the Andes mountains on the South America crust.Earthquakes and Volcanoes are also formed along this plate boundary ?
What is another name for the mountains of Munster?
Another name for the mountains of Munster is the Armorican foldings?
Name the 5 mountain ranges in the Armorican foldings(the mountains of Munster) what counties they’re in and how many years ago were they formed?
The Macgillycuddy’s Reeks in co.kerry, Comeragh Mountains in co.Waterford, Boggeragh mountains in co.Cork, Caha Mountains in co. Cork and the halted mountains in co.Limerick,Tipperary and Cork. They were formed 250 million years ago.
Where did the pressure come from that formed the Armorican mountains?
The pressure came from the South and formed these mountains
The Mounatins of Munster were much taller in the past ,but have been worn down.
What is the name of the highest mountain in Ireland and what mountain range is it from ?
Carrauntoohill in the mountain range of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks in co .kerry
