Chp 2 Flashcards
Atoms
The smallest unit of an element
Carbohydrate
An organic molecule composed of carbon
Chemical Bonds
Joining of chemical substances using attractions between electrons
Chemical Formula
Shorthand notation showing the type and number of atoms in a molecule
Chemical Reaction
Process involving the formation and/or breakage of chemical bonds resulting in new combinations of atoms.
Compound
A substance formed by two or more elements combined by ionic or covalent bonds.
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means
Enzyme
A protein that catalyzes chemical reactions
Inorganic substances
Small, simple substance that usually does not hace carbon and hydrogen in the same substances
Lipid
An organic macro-molecule containing mostly carbon and hydrogen with small amounts of oxygen Lipids do not mix with water
Molecule
A substances that formed by two or more atoms bonded together by covalent bonds
Nucleic Acid
A complex organic macromolecules composed of mucleotides.
Organic Substances
Large, complex substances that cdontain both carbon and hydrogen in the same
Protein
A group of nitrogen containing organic macromolecules formed of amino acids.
