Chp 11 Flashcards
Age-related changes that occur across the lifespan.
Contemporary views on human development
Development can appear as a gradual, continuous process, such as the acorn growing into a oak tree
Continuous
Development can appear as a sudden, discontinuous process, such as the butterfly emerging from a chrysalis.
Discontinuous
Results when the child receives a third full or partial copy of the 21st chromosome along with the usual two, usually because of faulty cell division. Results in intellectual disability, a pattern of mild physical abnormalities, and a probable life span of only 40 to 50 years. It is more common as maternal age increases.
Down syndrome
Record the cell’s experiences on the DNA, helping to stabilize gene expression.
Epigenetic tags
Produces several physical abnormalities including growth retardation, skin folds at corners of the eyes, nose, and mouth abnormalities, reduced IQ, cognitive and behavioral problems, poor impulse control etc.
Fetal alcohol syndrome
The contributions of heredity to our physical structure and behaviors.
Nature
The contributions of environmental factors and experience to our physical structure and behaviors.
Nurture
During pregnancy, the developing fetus is protected from exposure to toxins and disease-causing agents by the placenta, an organ attached to the wall of the mother’s uterus that provides the fetus with nutrients and oxygen.
Placenta
Not constant across the lifespan, just as an individual’s physical, cognitive, and social and emotional behavior changes
Span of development
Chemical agent that can harm the zygote, embryo, or fetus. For ex: Tobacco, alcohol, opioids, among others, even acetaminophen aka Tylenol
Teratogen
