Chp:1 System Biology Flashcards
Genome
Total amount of DNA in a cell
Transcriptomics
Depicts the expression level of genes
Proteomics
The proteome is the entire complement of proteins expressed by a genome cell, tissue or organism.
Proteomics is the large scale study of proteins, particularly their structures, function and interaction.
Important for studying enzymes involved in biosynthesis of pharmacologically active cpds
Metabolomics
Indicates the totality of small molecules that are formed by a cell, a tissue or organism under certain conditions.
Measures all metabolites in an organism qualitatively and quantitatively
Allows study of the relation between the composition of the extract and their biological effects
Bioinformatics
Genomics, proteomics and metabolomics all generate huge amount of data, the transformation of which into biological information requires informatic tool.
It is a multidisciplinary area of research aiming at creating and advancement of algorithms, computational and statistical techniques to solve problems of biological data.
Genomics
Study of gum resin of the plant Boswellia serrata Traditionally: used for inflammatory diseases since antiquity.
An extract of resin (BE) has proven to be anti-inflammatory in clinical trials.
Genetic basis for this effect was tested in a system of TNF-α induced gene expression in human microvascular endothelial cells.
Proteomics
Elucidation of enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of polyketides ( PKs)
Metabolomics
Study of the influence of ingestion of chamomile tea on the metabolite profile of urine. Compared with the profile obrained before ingestion of chamomile, urine excretion of Hippurate, glycine and unknown metabolite were increased and excretion of creatinine is decreased.
Synergy
Is the combined effect of substances that exceeds the sum of their individual effects . e.g. ………………..
How to prove synergy ???
