Encoding
The process of translating ideas feelings and thoughts into a code
Source
The originator of a thought or emotion who puts it into a code that can be understood by a receiver
Decoding
The process of interpreting ideas feelings and thoughts that have been translated into a code
Receiver
The person who decodes a message and attempts to make sense of what the source has encoded
Channel
The pathway through which messages are sent
Context
The physical historical and psychological communication environment
Human communication as action
Sent or transferred from source to receiver
Human communication as interaction
Receiver of the message response to the source through feedback
Human communication as transaction
Created based on mutual concurring sharing of ideas and feelings
Mediated communication
Communication that’s carried out using some other channel other than those face-to-face
Asynchronous Communication
When timing is out of sync delay between when you send a message and when it’s received
Synchronous Communication
Occurs on real-time speaker or response is immediate
Communication process
1) be aware of your communication with yourself and others
2) effectively use and interpret verbal messages
3) effectively use and interpret nonverbal messages
4) listen and respond thoughtfully to others
5) appropriately adapt messages to others
Interpersonal communication
Occurs simultaneously between two people who attempt to mutually influence each other
Impersonal communication
Treat people as objects or that responds to their roles rather than as unique people
