Choruses Flashcards

1
Q

Considering the science of frequencies, what is the difference between low and high frequencies on the human mind?

A

We associate high level of passion to high frequencies and we shift our attention towards them. We feel the lows but don’t turn to them really much. You can play with that : verse = middle, pre-chorus is climbing the mountain and at the chorus, you reach the top of the mountain. It’s like talking someone to a walk and making them feeling like going somewhere. The person has to say «how» on the top of the mountain. *you can start at the top also and be at the bottom in the chorus. Contrast is what matters in the story.

Q

What is melodic contour?

A

It’s how you draw your story with the frequencies. Low is the bottom, high is the sky, etc. Remember that high frequencies attract attention.

Q

What do you do in a song with you want to teach someone something?

A

Use repetition, especially in the chorus! You can even repeat a part of a word (love me like you do, lo lo love me like you do)… Less words in the chorus and more repetition.

Q

When do we start a song with a chorus?

A

If you start a song with a chorus, it makes people sing along from the beginning! You can also start with half of a chorus! If the chorus is a punch line (a surprise), don’t start with it!! If your song relies on progressing towards the chorus, don’t start with it.

Q

What should you do in order to verify if your chorus makes sense?

A

Isolate the chorus by and listen to it by itself. If you can understand the song by just listening to the chorus, your chorus is great. Otherwise, it’s too nebulous or it relies on the other parts to be understood!

It’s a chorus where you repeat the same chords progressions but you choose the main hooks from the chorus and repeat them again and again! You can also do a drop like techno style!

Q

How to finish the song!

A

If you repeat the chorus at the end, change it, otherwise will say “ok, I’ve got this know’’ and they won’t listen to the end. At extra stuff : instruments, counterpoint, deviate the melody etc. Make a huge build up. Finish with a climax! Make the last words, the main hook, so that people walk away with this in mind!

Q

Where should all the good stuff go?

A

In the chorus! Keep it in the chorus! It’s like a treasure. You can find the gold if you don’t open the treasure. Don’t steal from the treasure chest in verses.

17
Q

How to approach choruses? Three go to’s !

A

1) a statement (a key message that is simple)
2) questions (when you hear a question, you naturally want to answer it)
3) call to action (imperative)

  • the key is to communicate clearly
18
Q

How come it’s powerful to use exclamation in song writing (ex. ouh ouh! Oh oh! Hey Hey! ) Crowd feeling, crazy feelings and fun!

A

‘Cause often, people just want to have a great time and have fun.

19
Q

If you want to create big drama and a lot of emotions, what should you do?

A

Sing high and use a lot of variations with lots of lows. *with powerful key messages! In the end, the importance, is the contrast between static and disjoint melodies.

20
Q

What is the main point of songwriting?

A

Play with communication : sound, rhythm, words, texture etc. It has to deliver the communication and the emotions in clever ways.

21
Q

In a ballad, what is great way to deliver your emotions with your voice.

A

Long notes and legatos! Awesome for deep emotions.

22
Q

Writing songs considering the childhood playground : a good place to get ideas!

A

C’est agacer comme dans la cours d’école. Revenir en arrière! nah nah nah nah nah nah

23
Q

Where to get amazing ideas in the world?

A

Start to listen to the music around you : the way that people speak (their words, their pitches, the way they create emotions etc.) Find present things in REAL LIFE that haven’t been! Write real communication based on real life!

24
Q

Keep writing until you get an emotional rush!

A

Step out of your comfort zone! Pursue a path to greatness and originality! HAVE FUN!! :)
