Choruses Flashcards
Considering the science of frequencies, what is the difference between low and high frequencies on the human mind?
We associate high level of passion to high frequencies and we shift our attention towards them. We feel the lows but don’t turn to them really much. You can play with that : verse = middle, pre-chorus is climbing the mountain and at the chorus, you reach the top of the mountain. It’s like talking someone to a walk and making them feeling like going somewhere. The person has to say «how» on the top of the mountain. *you can start at the top also and be at the bottom in the chorus. Contrast is what matters in the story.
How much time you should wait for the chorus?
30-45 sec. if you can go faster, do it!
What song writing is all about?
Balance, story telling and making people reach the top of a mountain in the chorus!
How should chorus one and two should be?
Identical.
What should be the last thing you hear in a song?
THE BIGGEST HOOK of the song!
How should you consider writing between verses and chorus?
Have a significant contrast! Something that stands-out! Be creative to create contrasts in plenty of ways! But have one main contrast in a song!
How should the chord progression should be in a chorus?
Mainly simple. It doesn’t mean you can add spice (diminished chords for suspense etc.)
What is melodic contour?
It’s how you draw your story with the frequencies. Low is the bottom, high is the sky, etc. Remember that high frequencies attract attention.
What do you do in a song with you want to teach someone something?
Use repetition, especially in the chorus! You can even repeat a part of a word (love me like you do, lo lo love me like you do)… Less words in the chorus and more repetition.
What is sequential repetition in songwriting?
It’s repeating something important and play it in a different way, counterpoint if you want, different notes, background, etc.
Where can you place lyrics?
1) on beat one
2) after beat one
3) use a pickup line (end the line on beat one)
* you can play with them in the chorus*** It’s amazing! It can give plenty of messages!
When do we start a song with a chorus?
If you start a song with a chorus, it makes people sing along from the beginning! You can also start with half of a chorus! If the chorus is a punch line (a surprise), don’t start with it!! If your song relies on progressing towards the chorus, don’t start with it.
What should you do in order to verify if your chorus makes sense?
Isolate the chorus by and listen to it by itself. If you can understand the song by just listening to the chorus, your chorus is great. Otherwise, it’s too nebulous or it relies on the other parts to be understood!
What is a B or a drop chorus?
It’s a chorus where you repeat the same chords progressions but you choose the main hooks from the chorus and repeat them again and again! You can also do a drop like techno style!
How to finish the song!
If you repeat the chorus at the end, change it, otherwise will say “ok, I’ve got this know’’ and they won’t listen to the end. At extra stuff : instruments, counterpoint, deviate the melody etc. Make a huge build up. Finish with a climax! Make the last words, the main hook, so that people walk away with this in mind!
