Chordates. Chapt.1 Flashcards

1
Q

Define chordates (explaining every term in it

A

Chordates are deuterostome ceolomates in which at one stage of their life posses a notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, endostyle and post anal tail.

Notochord is a stiff dorsal supporting rod defining the longitudinal axis in the embryo

Dorsal hollow nerve cord is what differentiates into spinal cord and brain.

Endostyle becomes slits open to the outside in vertebrae with gills and leave no external feature in those without gills

Post anal tail extends beyond the anus

Q

What are pyrosomes and dolioloids

16
Q

Why are lancelets called acrainiates

A

Because they do not have braincase ( cranium)

17
Q

What are myomers

A

they are composed of uninucleated striated muscle fibers

18
Q

Why are lancelets called cephalochordates

A

Because the notochord extends from near the tip of the tail to the anterior of the body

19
Q

What is dioecious

A

It means sexes are different/separate. in that they develop only ovaries or testes
Lancelets sexes are separate

20
Q

The central nervous system of amphioxus is covered by a vascular membrane called

A

Leptomeninx

21
Q

The mouth of lancelets or amphioxus is covered by _________

The edges of which form the_________

A

Oral hood

Buccal cirri

22
Q

Amphioxus posses pharyngeal slits

And the slits do not serve a respiratory role but help to facilitate _____

A

Filter feeding

23
Q

What functions as kidney in cephalochordates

A

Cyrtopodocytes (or solenocytes)

24
Q

Amphioxus uses ______ for respiration

A

Skin
