Chomsky Flashcards
what does Chomsky do?
rejects skinners behaviourism
evaluating skinners behaviours,
-his application od principles of animal behaviour to much more complex human behaviour is unsound
-human behaviour is in its entirety is merely a set of conditioned responses determined by genetics and the environment, then his own behavioural thesis merely example of a conditioned response.
is language innate?
-Chomsky argues that language is an innate ability.
Chomskys beliefs about language
-childs brain contained special language learning abilities at birth which enabled them to communicate from birth - the innate theory
-he argued that a child was naturally predisposed to learn a language
-this was by hearing speech which is interpreted by brain using its natural ability to apply structures and principles
-believed child is held to be born with entire set of linguistic universals plus evaluation procedures, built intuit he somehow uses this as a set grid through which he filters the particular language he happens to hear around him
