When do we give statins and why?
We give statins in the evening because that is when cholesterol synthesis is the most active.
Statins reduces LDL and VLDL being produced by the liver.
What does niacin do?
Treats high cholesterol by
Reducing LDL and triglyceride levels
Most effective at increasing HDL
What is a side effect of niacin?
Flushing of the face.
Can be treated with aspirin
What is a bile-acid binding drug?
Colesevelam
What does colesevelam do?
Lowers LDL by increasing hepatocyte receptors for uptake.
Prevents reabsorption of bike acids
What drug is a cholesterol inhibitor?
Ezetimibe
What do fibric acid derivatives do?
LOWERS TG
Raises HDL
What is a type of fibric acid derivative?
Genfibrozil
What do fatty acids do for the body?
Decrease VLDL but can increase serum LDL
