Cholera gravis
Vibrioses are halophilic organisms that require salt for growth except for what species
Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio mimicus
What serogroup mostly causes cholera
O1 or O139
Blood type at greatest and at least risk for Cholera
Greatest risk: Blood type O
Least risk: Blood type AB
With or without known animal resevoir
No known animal reservoir
Characteristic stool appearance of cholera
Rice water stool
Confirmatory test for cholera
Dark-field microscopy identification of Vibrio cholerae in stool
Medium: TCBS (thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose) or TTG (taurochlorate-tellurite-gelatin) agar
First line treatment for cholera
Fluid resuscitation
Antibiotics for cholera
Not necessary
If nonpregnant and fully susceptible, may give tetracycline
Others: doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, azithromycin
Vibrio species associated with soft tissue infections
Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio damsel, Vibrio alginolyticus
