Cholangitis and Cholecystitis Flashcards
what does your liver produce when you eat fat?
bile which emulsifies these fats
what is emulsification?
Emulsification is when the fat is split into much smaller pieces so that the surface area for metabolism to act is much larger.
what are hepatocytes and what do they produce
-liver cells
-bile
how do hepatocytes produce bile
bysecreting bilirubin, bile salts, cholesterol, phospholipids, proteins, ions, and water into their canaliculi(thin tubules between adjacent hepatocytes that eventually join to form bile ducts).
where does the liver produce bile
gall bladder, when you eat fats the liver not only produces oil but the gall bladder also squeezes out its bile
what is cholangitis?
cholangitis is an inflammation of the bile duct system
what is cholecystitis
inflammation of the gall bladder due to gall stone blockage
what is acalculous cholecystitis
gallbladder inflammation without gallstones
what signs and symptoms of cholangitis
-fever
-jaundice
-shock
-RUQ pain
-confusion
signs symptoms for women who have cholangitis
-RUQ pain
-fever
-malaise
-Nausea/vomiting
-pyrexia tachycardia
hypotention
-confusion
what is choledocholithiasis
stones inn the bile duct and is the most common cause of acute cholangitis
why does acute cholangitis occur
due to impaired drainage and bacterial overgrowth
what is cholangitis referred pain
When your gallbladder is inflamed and swollen, it irritates your phrenic nerve. Your phrenic nerve stretches from the abdomen, through the chest, and into your neck.
Each time you eat a fatty meal, it aggravates the nerve and causes referred pain in your right shoulder blade.
how do you assess for cholangitis?
-Murphy’s sign
what is the treatment for cholangitis
Treatment will revolve around adequate pain relief and symptom management. Transport to hospital is essential.
