appendicitis Flashcards
what is appendicitis
appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, and it typically occurs when the appendix becomes blocked leading to infection.
what are some causes for appendicitis?
-blockage
-hard stool
-Enlarged lymphoid tissue:The lymphatic tissue in the appendix can swell due to infections (e.g., gastrointestinal infections or respiratory infections), causing obstruction.
-Foreign object or parasites
-bacterial infections
-Inflammation or rupture
-tumors
what is the caecum and what does it do?
The caecum (also spelled cecum) is a pouch-like structure located at the beginning of the large intestine, where the small intestine (specifically the ileum) empties into the colon. It plays a role in the digestive system, particularly in absorbing fluids and salts that remain after digestion and mixing the remaining waste with mucus
what is the function of the appendix?
-mucus production: goblet cells in the appendix produce mucus and lubricate the content of the appendix and protect its inner surface.
-transport mucus: The mucus secreted by the goblet cells is transported into the lumen (the cavity inside the appendix). This mucus aids in moving waste materials and bacteria through the appendix and eventually into the caecum, where it enters the large intestine
-Role in Immune Function: Mucus in the appendix may also help to maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria by trapping pathogens and facilitating their removal, supporting the appendix’s suggested role in the immune system.
