A
5 BACK BLOWS, 5 ABDOMINAL THRUSTS

How do we carry out back blows
A
stand BEHIND and to the side of the casualty. use one hand to support their chest and lean the victim forwards. Use the heel of your hand to deliver five seperate blows to the casualtys back firmly between the shoulder blades. Do this 5 times.

How do we carry out abdominal thrusts?(5)
A
- stand behind the patient wrapping arms around the pts upper abdomen.
- make a fist with one hand placed between the umbilicus) and ribcage and firmly grasp the back of the fist with the other hand.
- bring both hands upwards and inwards in a quick sharp movement - it is hoped that this will dislodge the obstruction
- repeat 5 times. - if choking has not been relieved and pt/patient becomes unresponsive start CPR.

What is NOT ADVISED for a choking infant and why?
A
ABDOMINAL THRUSTS as it can cause harm to internal organs - use only a cycle of back blows and chest thrusts
