CHM 111 Chapter 2 Flashcards
Robert Boyle (1627-1691)
Provided evidence for atoms, and defined the nature of an element.
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804)
Isolated oxygen gas from mercury oxide (HgO) by decomposition.
Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794)
Showed that the mass of a compound is preserved. Posited the Law of the Conservation of Mass.
John Dalton (1766-1844)
Proposed a system of explanations for the Law of the Conservation of Mass and the the Law of Definite Proportions.
J.J. Thomson (1856-1940)
Discovered electrons using a cathode-ray tube, and determined that electrons are negatively charged.
R.A. Millikan (1868-1953)
Determined the mass of an electron through the oil drop experiment. Put a number on the strength of the electric charge.
Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937)
Performed gold foil experiment. Discovered the nucleus. We now have evidence of the positively charged component of the atom.
