A
After WWII, Mao Tse Tung encouraged people to have children because he wanted China to outnumber other races.

What were the effects of overpopulation?
A
Couldn’t grow enough food, lots of famine, large death rate.

How was over population managed?
A
“Later, longer, fewer” policy:
- marry later
- wait longer
- have fewer children
- in 1970s
- average number of children went from 6 to 3
One Child Policy:
- Introduced 1979
- Carrot: higher wages, better schooling, etc.
- Stick: lost all benefits, eg. healthcare
