The Three Gorges Dam cost $25,000,000,000 ($25 billion) to build, which is a huge amount of money that could have been invested into other areas. But there are positives, such as there is much more trade due to the fact that ships can travel up and down the River Yangtze much more safely, and it stops the Yangtze from flooding, which means that the government don’t have to pay huge amounts of money to compensate the victims.
What were the social impacts of the Three Gorges Dam?
Some negative social aspects of the Three Gorges Dam are that 2,000,000 people had to be relocated in the building of the dam, many workers who helped to build it died in the process, and the Yangtze is much more polluter now, which is a major risk to people using its water. Put there are positives. It stops the Yangtze from flooding, so people don’t have to be evacuated, and it creates lots of electricity for the big cities along the Yangtze (Shanghai and Chongqing)

A positive environmental impact of the Three Gorges Dam is that i stops the Yangtze from flooding, which means that the landscape is not washed away, but there are far more negatives, such as the death of wildlife because of the pollution and it is built on a fault line, which could mean an earthquake could strike.

The west of China is the most sparsely populated area in China, because of the Gobi Desert and the Himalayan Mountains, which means it has a very harsh climate.

The east of China is the most densely populated, especially Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau, because of the warm, temperate climate and the fact that the Yangtze River flows through the east of China, which means crops are very fertile.

Some positives are that Beijing’s deprived areas were improved, spending more than $200 million on dilapidated housing in the city, and that tourism had a massive boost because of the Olympics, receiving over 600,000 extra foreign visitors.

A negative is that the main stadium, the ‘Bird’s Nest’ is now hardly being used any more, even though hundreds of millions of dollars was spent on it. Another negative is the fact that China has a bad human rights record.
