- Girls were often left abandoned as boys were preferred (orphans)
- A child would have 2 parents and 4 grandparents to look after (not enough care homes)
- In 2020 - estimated - men will outnumber women by 30 million (social tension)
- By 2050 1/4 of pop will be over 65

- Too many old people - Not enough money to support them in (health)care
- Dependency ratio - won’t be enough people working to pay for the elderly
- China’s economy won’t have enough workers to keep it expanding

A
- Population rapidly grew
