The Sichuan Earthquake
The earthquake occurred between the Eurasian plate and the Indian plate
Happened at 2:28pm on 12/05/2008
The earthquake lasted 120 seconds and was a 7.9 on the Richter scale
Factors affecting vulnerability
Rural area
High population density (43 million people)
Less developed than areas along the Eastern coastline
Poor infrastructure, landslides and floods (it took 30 hours to reach some areas in Wenchuan)
Social impacts
Initial death tolls were 8,700
This rose to 69,000 with 18,000 missing 2 months after
347,000 injured
5 -11 million people were homeless
5 million buildings collapsed
Juyuan middle school (Dujiangyan) collapsed – 900 pupils killed
Economic Impacts
Communications were stopped
$75 million to restore infrastructure
Power and water supplies were cut
Total economic damage was around $125.6 billion
Tourism industry was greatly affected
Response and Recovery
20 helicopters were sent to rescue survivors
1 million temporary homes were built
3.3 million tents were put up to help survivors
Chinese government pledged $10 million rebuilding fund
Banks wrote off debts of survivors who didn’t have insurance
International help was requested 2 days after the quake
£100 million was donated to the Red Cross 2 weeks after the quake
