Child Study 2 Flashcards
Barkley- Levenson & Galvan aim
To see if adolescents are more sensitive to EV ( probability of high rewards ) than adults & have greater VS activity as EV/ expected value increases
Method
Lab & Quasi experiment. IV= adult or adolescent. DV= number of gambles in spinner game & VS activity
Design
Independent measures
Sample
Self selected 19 adults 25-30 years (8 male, 11 female), 22 adolescents 13-17 years (11m, 11f). All right handed.
The ads were in posters & online & a database of UCLA previous pps. Self report showed no psychiatric disorders, developmental delays or medication
Materials
3 tesla trio MRI machine. 140 functional & 2 structural images per pps.
Procedure- intake session
Informed consent gained. Pps state how much spending money they have per month as it affects the value they place on rewards of money. Adult average= $467 and Adolescents $52. Pps given $20 to play with in next session, told they could win extra $20 or loose all. Giving money pre test allows feelings of ownership & prevents reckless gambling from feeling the money is not yours.
Procedure- FRMI Session
Pps see an on screen spinner= circle, one half shows money you can win, other half= what you loose e.g ($5/$20). Gain/loss spinner sides counterbalanced. Probability of win/loss is 50%. All pps trained in the task before the brain scan.
