what are the elements that MUST be present in child abuse?
- significant harm to child
- carer has some responsibility for that harm
- significant connection between carer’s responsibility for child and harm to child
3 elements MUST ALL BE PRESENT.
what is ‘The Children & Young People’s Act 2014’?
encourages healthcare and public bodies to consider children’s rights and requires them to prepare reports on what they are doing to progress children’s rights
what are some contributing factors to child abuse?
- drugs, alcohol, poverty, stress, abused as a child (parent), unrealistic expectation, unwanted pregnancy, wrong gender, housing condition. isolation, etc
what are the 3 main concerns when establishing a parents capacity?
- domestic violence history
- drug & alcohol abuse
- mental health problems
cumulative problems INCREASE the likelihood of a negative outcome
what are the main categories of child abuse?
- physical
- emotional
- neglect
- sexual
what are the main categories of vulnerable children?
- under 5s
- irregular attenders
- Medical problems & disabilities
what are some examples that dental neglect can lead to?
- toothache
- disturbed sleep
- difficulty eating/change in food preferences
- absence from school
- repeated antibiotics
- repeated GA extractions
- teasing due to poor dental appearance
what are examples of WILFUL neglect in a dental setting?
after dental problems have been highlighted to carer:
- irregular attendance, failed attendance, cancellations
- failure to complete treatment
- returning in pain repeatedly
- repeated GA for extractions
what is stage 1 in trying to combat dental neglect in children?
stage 1: preventive dental team management
- raise concerns with parents, offer support, set targets, keep records and monitor progress
what is stage 2 in trying to combat dental neglect in children?
stage 2: preventive multi-agency management
- liaise with other professionals (health visitor, school nurse etc) to see if shared concerns
- check if child is subject to a child protection plan
- child may be subject of a CAF (common assessment framework) at this level
what is stage 3 in trying to combat dental neglect in children?
stage 3: child protection referral?
- in complex or deteriorating situations
- follow local guidelines
- referral is to social services
