What is abuse and neglect?
- maltreatment of a child by an adult or child.
- this could be by inflicting direct hard on child or failing to act to prevent harm.
- could be in a family, institution or community setting.
What are the three main factors that safeguard and promote welfare of the child?
- child’s development needs.
- parenting capacity.
- family and environmental factors (socio-economic factors)
when might immediate referrals to social care be evoked?
- if at immediate risk of physical, emotional, sexual harm or neglect.
- unexplained injuries inconsistent with explanations.
- victims of trafficking.
- toxic trio evident.
what is the toxic trio in terms of risk factors for child abuse?
- mental health.
- substance abuse.
- domestic abuse.
*usually concerning parent or carer.
what are the main categories of abuse?
- physical.
- emotional.
- sexual.
- neglect.
define physical abuse.
- Causing physical harm including hitting, shaking, throwing, poisoning.
- also includes fabrication of symptoms and inducing illness.
Define sexual abuse.
- forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, whether or not the child knows what’s happening.
- includes non-penetrative contact.
- also grooming, showing images etc which can be done online.
what is child sexual exploitation?
- form of sexual abuse where someone takes advantage of lack of power to coerce, manipulate, deceive an underage child into social activity in exchange for something victim wants or financial advantage of perpetrator.
- could still be exploitation despite apparent consent.
define neglect.
- persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical or psychological needs likely to cause serious impairment of child’s health or development.
- substance abuse during pregnancy counts.
what are some examples of neglect?
- failure to provide food, clothing, shelter.
- failure to protect child from physical or emotional harm.
- failure to ensure access to medical care etc.

Define emotional abuse.
- persistent emotional maltreatment of a child causing severe adverse effects on emotional development.
what are some distinctive features of emotional abuse?
- having developmentally inappropriate expectations for child which is out of child’s capability or requirement.
- preventing child participating in normal social interaction.
- conveying to child about them being worthless, unloved, inadequate.
- not allowing opportunities for expression of feelings.
how can you handle a disclosure with the victim?
- LISTEN rather than asking questions.
- do not stop a young person recalling events.
- remain calm, do not give away that info they have provided is shocking or upsetting.
- do not promise that you won’t tell anyone or that everything will be okay.
as a clinician what can you do to raise concerns?
- record events accurately with dates etc.
- inform line manager or supervisor.
- fill in a MARF form and refer to social care.
- speak to safeguarding team.
Define abuse.
physical, sexual, financial, emotional or psychological violation or neglect of a person unable to protect themselves, or prevent from happening, or remove themselves from the situation.
