describe the one word/ holophrastic stage
12-18 months, child speaks one word utterances
describe the two word stage
two word sentences usually appear when a child is 18 months old, in this stage the child focuses on the key words and misses out words that convey less information
describe the telegraphic stage
from the age of around 2, beginning to produce 3 and 4 word utterances, some are grammatically complete others miss out key grammatical features. articles, auxiliary verbs, prepositions and conjunctions may be missing
describe the post telegraphic stage
3+ years, child begins to use auxiliary verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, questions and negatives
what are auxiliary verbs
used together with a main verb to show the verbs tense or form a negative or question (have, be and do)
what are conjunctions
a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause (and, but, if)
what are inflections
word endings e.g. -ing, -ed
what are prepositions
a word governing and preceding a noun
