behaviourism
the theory that children develop language from what they hear around them, and that they learn from imitation, reinforcement and correction.
innatism
the theory that there is a part of the brain that contains knowledge at the birth of what is and what is not a possible language. we are said to have been born with an Innate grammar, or a special “language acquisition device”
interactionism
the theory that language only develops when children have the opportunity to interact with others, language emerges from and is dependent upon, social interaction.
critical learning period for acquisition
the period of time in which it is critical for a child to learn language
