Child directed speech CDS Flashcards
What is CDS
the various ways in which a caregiver adapts their language to help children develop their language
what are the features of CDS
higher pitch, longer pauses, repetition, simpler sentences, more questions, use of diminutives (words that suggest a smaller version of something), use of nicknames and nouns.
what is expansion
where a caregiver might develop the child’s language to make it more grammatically correct
what is recast
when a child’s utterance is repeated to them and corrected
what is under-extension
when the child gets the extent of the label wrong, e.g only labels their own cat a cat and not all other cats.
what is over-extension
when label is over extended and applied to more things than it should be e.g all 4 legged animals labelled a cat.
