Q

What is Sleep Onset Association Disorder?

A

• One of most common sleep disorders in infants and toddlers • Child learns to fall asleep only under certain conditions (such as being rocked or fed)

Does not develop the ability to self-sooth o If awakens at night (normal to have brief arousal every 60-90 mins in infants) – unable to get back to sleep without same conditions = crying = prolonged night waking •

Treatment

  1. Rapid withdrawal (extinction) or more gradual withdrawal (graduated extinction) of parental assistance at sleep onset and during the night
  2. Graduated = weaning the child with periodic “checks” by the parents at successively longer intervals

Older children can provide more suitable transitional objects (blanket or toys) + positive reinforcement

Goal = self soothing
