Child Centeredness Flashcards
Aries
Child centredness began during the industrial revolution after children didn’t survive the harsh working conditions and so laws were introduced .
Industrialisation
Lol idk
Compulsory schooling
Children became more dependant on their parents once the compulsory school law came into place. Children were also then seen as innocent and vulnerable rather than useful.
Individualisation
Families used to be exclusively nuclear, however now due to industrialisation they can be any structure
Family size
Smaller families means more attention for each individual child, whereas larger families means there is less child centeredness.
Money
As many women work there is often more money available to spend on the child in a dual income household. There are also benefits available for lone parents.
Jenks
Relationships in a chaotic post modern times are increasingly unstable. Couples split up and everyone is insecure because they realise they are held together by romantic love instead of confluent love.
Confluent love
Because more parents are getting divorces, children are even more significant in their parents lives as the children cant walk out, but the partners can.
Sue palmer / toxic childhood.
Toxic childhood - rapid technological changes and cultural differences have damaged children’s PIES.
Toxic childhood example
Childhood obesity caused by junk food deliberately targeted at children.
Testing
The constant testing of children in education leads parents to become obsessive and competitive over their child’s progress.
Stranger danger
More cars on the road means parents are hesitant to let their children go out and play due to stranger danger, and the fear that their child will get kidnapped / run over.
Pester power
Large businesses deliberately target children and rely on ‘pester power’ to sell their products, because children will see the marketing and ‘pester’ their parents to buy it for them.
Social class
Richer parents can afford to buy their child music lessons etc, whereas poorer parents often have to work more and therefore can’t pay as much attention to their child.
Large families
Older siblings are often required to take on an adult role and look after their younger siblings, because their parents are too busy working or looking after their other children.
