Define child
A person under the age of eighteen when considered as dependent or neglected
Vulnerability of children
Child shows sudden changes; lack of medical treatment; child is afraid to be around perpetrators
Indicators of parental maltreatment
Parent denies any problems child has; sees the child as bad; shows little concern for child
How children experience abuse
Unprepared; can’t protect themselves; often no witnesses; often wants the abuse to stop but doesn’t want offender punished
Initial interview techniques for children
Accommodate needs and interests of child; provide notification to parents of the interview asap; limit number of interviews to avoid trauma
Forensic interviewing
Always have someone trained in forensic interviewing conduct the interview

Build rapport; anatomy identification; touch inquiry; abuse scenario; closure

Protective custody for child up to 24 hours; may be extended 24 hrs if child is placed with relative
