Q

Why would we use Gravity to assist in bronchial drainage?

A

-positioning your patient so that gravity is assisting with bronchiole drainage;

Study Tip: Think of the patient and the airway like an upside down tree with the main stem bronchus being the trunk, branching off to the right and the left bronchi and then into the smaller airways and then out to the little tiny airways.
Ex. So if you have a pt that has secretion in the right lower lobe you would position the pt on their left side and with their head lower than their chest. It helps the secretions to move from the smaller airways to the larger so the secretions can be suctioned out or coughed out

Q

We would position the patient in multiple positions that are the most beneficial. Once in position we would use _____ and ________ to help bring those secretions to the larger stem.

A
  1. percussion
  2. vibration
    •The three can help bring secretions to larger airways

Q

Commercial vibrators such as jackets or vest are used for what type of patients and why?

A

Cystic fibrosis because that is their way of life and must be done daily. There are also jackets or vests that can be used especially for these patients.

16
Q

CPT is also used when the patient has retained secretions in presence of an ______ airway which occurs during intubation.

A

artificial

17
Q

Lobar atelectasis suspected of being caused by _______ ?

A

Mucus plugging: CPT is used to help get the mucus plug out of the lungs;

Example: patients will be doing so-so then O2 saturation drops into the 80’s but then you perform the CPT on them and their O2 saturation elevates back into the 90’s.

19
Q

Why should the patient’s face should be visible?

A

to see how they are tolerating the procedure

20
Q

What are the benefits of using CPT for your patient?

A

It is used to assist in effective coughing, re-educate breathing muscles and to try to improve ventilation of the lungs.
