Chest Flashcards
Detecting rotation on a PA CXR is done by evaluating?
- distances b/vertebral column + sternal ends of clavicles
2. comparing lengths of posterior ribs
The sternal end that demo’s the least vertebral column superimposition + the side of the chest w/greater posterior rib length represents the side of the chest ___closest/farthest___ fr. the IR (PA CXR)
farthest
How have detecting scoliosis be distinguished fr. rotation? (PA CXR)
comparing the distance fr. the vertebral column to the lateral lung edges down the length of the lungs.
Distances are uniform down the length of the lung field, although when both lungs are compared, distance is shorter on one side. This is a patient who is/has ___rotated/scoliosis___. (PA CXR)
rotated
The vertebral column to lateral lung edge distances vary down the length of each lung and b/each lung. This is a patient who is/has ___rotated/scoliosis___. (PA CXR)
scoliosis
What does the depressing the shoulder do in a PA CXR?
It positions the lateral ends of the clavicles on the same horizontal plane as the medial end. Thus provides a better visualization of apical lung field
What does a PA CXR look like when the shoulders are not depressed?
The lateral ends of clavicles are elevated, causing the middle + lateral portion to be demo’d within the apical chest
What does placing the back of the patient’s hands on their hip do for a PA CXR?
Allows the patient to easily rotate their elbows and shoulders anteriorly to place the scapulae outside the lung field. Thus better visualizing the superolateral portion of the lungs
A patient is holding bars instead of placing the back of their hands on their hips, what should the tech make sure the patient is doing with their shoulders?
Shoulders are protracted when holding bars to keep scapulae outside lung field.
The tilt of the MCP determines the relationship between?
- manubrium to the t-vertebrae
- amount of apical lung field seen above clavicles
- degree of lung+heart foreshortening
A PA CXR shows the lungs + heart foreshortened, the manubrium is @ the level of the 5th t-vertebra or lower, and more than 2.5 cm of apices in demo’d above the claivcles. This patient’s MCP was tilted ___anteriorly/posteriorly___.
MCP tilted anteriorly
When does anterior MSP tily happen occur?
- women w/sagging breasts
2. patient’s w/protruding abdomen
A PA CXR shows the lungs and heart foreshortened, the manubrium is @ the level b/the 1st and 3rd t-vertebra, and less than 2.5 cm of the apices are demo’d above the clavicles. This patient’s MCP was tilted ___anteriorly/posteriorly___
MCP tilted posteriorly
In a PA CXR, how could you determine poor shoulder positioning vs. MCP tilting?
- measuring the amount of lung field demo’d superior to the clavicles
- determining which vertebrae are superimposed over the manubrium
A PA CXR shows a decreased lung field superior to the clavicles and the manubrium @ the level of the 4th t-vertebrae. This patient’s ___shoulder/MCP___ was poorly positioned.
